Day 15 - Stupid Bacteria
1/14/21 - Thursday
Morning: Baby James will be 2 weeks old today. He had another rough night. His FIO2 is up to 60%. He got a new doctor today, since they shift every week. The results from his urine culture came back negative. They will do a saliva sample today to test that for a bacteria infection. But his blood culture did come back positive for an infection. The antibiotics that he is on should help and they will test him again today or tomorrow to be sure it’s working. They will add 1-2 tbsp of milk slowly to see how his digestion cooperates. The infection could have happened from a number of things, including the tube in his throat, the removal of the umbilical line, the IV, human interaction... lots of variables for the cause. Similar to grown-ups, lots of ways to get an infection. Due to his size, they are taking all the precautions needed to eliminate the bacteria ASAP and not waiting for test results, hence why they started the antibiotics prior to the culture samples. We feel good about the caution and care the medical professionals are taking.
Evening: The infection is called in his blood is called Staph Epidermidis. Getting with 3 ML of milk tonight to see how he tolerates it. Weighed in 655g tonight, which we knew due to not getting his feed. He’s being monitored closely and is in good hands. He definitely doesn’t like to be messed with and is very strong! He was moving around a bunch when mom got to change his diaper tonight. She handled it like a pro! Mom also got to take his temperature and do the mouth swab. She’s a natural at this taking care of baby thing. 👶
Lindsay's Health Update:
Doctor's appointment today with her OB said that she is still heavily restricted but can now visit the NICU, but in a wheelchair. (We've already been doing this.) When not visitng the NICU she is supposed to be resting. This is because she is still on blood pressure medicine and blood thinners for the preeclampsia and Factor V Leiden. If we can go a week with normal blood pressures then she will be able to get off of the BP meds next week. We still have 4 more weeks of Lovenox injections. It would be rare if the liver numbers or blood pressures went back up but with increased activity they could. Fingers crossed!
