Day 90 - Surgery Tomorrow! - James moved to the PICU!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2021

Early Morning: James had physical therapy but did not tolerate it very well. Unfortunately our PT missed a really great morning where James actually stood for the first time. We don't have a photo of it but it happened.

Mid-Morning:
Early this morning we found out that James is getting scheduled for surgery for tomorrow!! There was a last-minute opening so this morning everyone is rushing around to coordinate this. Today we are signing consent forms with GI, ENT and Anesthesia. James will be getting a tracheostomy, a g-tube, and possibly a circumcision. The circumcision may or may not be done because it is swollen. Although it would be ideal to get this done while he is on anesthesia we wouldn't want to do something out of convenience if it is not the right time and could possibly need to be redone later.

Our nurse made his tape into a Football today. 🏈 (Those are not stitches)

Afternoon: Boy, it was a whirlwind of an afternoon! Non-Stop since 10:00am... meeting with doctors, going on a tour of the PICU, packing up all of our stuff in our NICU room that we had been staying in for 3 months, signing consent forms, meeting with nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists. James had to have a covid test prior to going over, which was absolutely ridiculous. (Don't get us started!) We had several nurses help us pack up and prepare for the move. Essentially we had to be discharged from the NICU and admitted into the PICU. Mom walked over with James, a Charge Nurse, a Charge Respiratory Therapist, and our Primary Nurse. It was like a little parade for James as we walked across the entire 2nd Floor and entire 3rd Floor NICU passing by every nurse giving James well wishes on his way to the PICU. Most of these nurses had James at one point over the post 90 days! Very emotional! 🥲 Also for some reason the machine he was hooked up to was whistling so as we went, down the halls, over the bridge crossing MLK, and through the Children's Hospital it sounded like a train. 🚂 🚃

Once James arrived in the PICU it was as if he was a new patient. They checked all of his vitals, weighed him, drew blood, chest x-ray, tested him for MRSA, did measurements, etc. They even started him an IV using an ultrasound to get a deep vein so he is prepped for surgery. He now has a shield on his arm. They also removed his neobar which is the ET tube guard and instead they just use tape here in the PICU. Tomorrow after surgery James will not have any tubes in his face. We will be able to really see his face for the first time. 👶

Evening: James is now scheduled for surgery at 9:30am, which has been pushed back. He is NPO after 3am and will be getting a wipe down of antibacterial soap to be prepped for surgery. Around 11:30pm, the RT team re-did James' taped ET tube. They paralyzed him for this. They do things a little differently in the PICU.
