Day 127 - 3rd IV for a 7-day antibiotic
Thursday, May 6th, 2021
James has had BPD episodes all morning. Last night was pretty rough too. He weighed in at 4130 grams (9lb 1oz) last night and 4280 tonight (9lb 6oz).
New Doctor today in the rotation. No changes.
PT and Speech came by.
We have an RN who is really sweet to James and an intern who is one of the best yet. They have been on top of it today.
At 1pm an IV was attempted so we could give him his antibiotic by 3pm. Mom informed the nurse that we needed 3 people previously to hold him down. An RT last week tried to hold his arm while getting an IV in his wrist and failed because James is strong and moves. Mom offered her to help hold him down this time. Our RN managed to get it in his hand but then lost the IV because James had moved. Probably needed another set of hands to hold him down. The RN thought she could hold down his arm down while holding the IV and he is pretty strong (and moves a lot) so it came out. Now it's time to get the Charge Nurse who was successful the last few times...
It's really hard for parents to watch things like this. James has been stuck 12 times and is already on his 3rd IV for a 7 day antibiotic.
Hands on at 9pm and then James was then pretty alert until 10:30pm or so.
Evening BPD events: 11:30pm, 4am
During a BPD event we checked his diaper and it was clean. After the event he had a full wet and dirty diaper. So his events have been recently triggered by the actual bowel movement not just a wet/dirty diaper. This is typical for BPD.
P.S. You can email James your love and support as often as you’d like. Mom and Dad read these email to James as they come in. We all love them! JamesWestonAbramowitz@gmail.com
