Day 128 - Fourth Time's the Charm

Friday, May 7th, 2021

Last night was decent. He had a good run of sleep from midnight to 4:00am. 😴 Then he had back-to-back BPD episodes from about 4:00am to 6:30am. 😮

Same great nurse and intern today as yesterday. It was nice to have the continuity of care!

Today was the last day of antibiotics for his UTI. He only had one more dose to go at 3pm!! 💉 Unfortunately his scalp IV became loose sand be fell out (it was already superficial). They needed to get another IV! Four IVs for a 7-day antibiotic! This time the intern managed to get an IV into his left foot on her second attempt after trying his hand. Finally his last dose of antibiotics was administred at 3pm.

But this UTI isn't over...

The urine culture that had been brewing for the past 48 hours kinda came back with a new type of bacteria in the urine. 🦠🧫 🤷‍♀️ It's a version of staph, probably from all of the urine catheters that have been tried. So we have 2 options...

Option A) Doing another urine cath to make sure he actually has another strand of infection. However this could potentially cause one and last time it took 4 attempts.

OR

Option B) Just give him another round of antibiotics to kill the new bacteria even if he may not have it.

We are going with Option B. So the doctor is going to look into giving James an antibiotic through his G-tube instead of IV. Hopefully this is an option, but it might not be.

Mom was able to step out for lunch to meet with a good friend who she hasn't seen since before covid! We are very excited for her gender reveal tomorrow! 💙💜 Mom was only able to do so because she felt comfortable with the RNs and RT today!

Mom held James at the end of day shift. But James ended up bradying in his sleep again. Mom had to sit him up to wake him so that his heart rate would go back up. He did not like this and then his lungs began to spasm causing a bad BPD episode. His diaper was dry and clean, but after the event was over he had a wet diaper full of pee. Mom thinks that means it is painful for him to urinate. Which doctor said that could definitely be the case with still having an infection. ☹️

Tonight we have a great experienced nurse who we've only had one time before. We asked her to be our primary night nurse the first time we had her. But she said she needed to think about it. 😥 Not going to lie, Mom and Dad thinks that getting a primary nurse is one of the most awkward things ever. It feels like you're asking someone to prom that you don't really know. Oh well, we should be out of here in just a few short months. Lol 😆🤣😢😥😔😞

Around 1:30am weighed in at 4345 grams (9lb 9oz). James slept from 2am to 6am! A 4 hour window!

P.S. You can email James your love and support as often as you’d like. Mom and Dad read these email to James as they come in. We all love them! JamesWestonAbramowitz@gmail.com
