Day 177 - Happy Birthday Dad!
Friday, June 25th, 2021
James started off the morning projectile vomiting on his Primary who just returned from her week off. So this morning we did bath and trach care earlier than expected. Today James is sportin one of his new onesies Dad got for Father's Day along with his converse sock sneakers! It taken take very long for his G-tube to leak and change into another outfit. His G-tube just needs time to heal and for the stoma to get smaller.
He is a very happy baby wanting to be held and cuddled all the time.
In the evening Mom tried sham feeding with James. This was the first time James was put to breast. Sham feeding is when the Mom pumps and empties first so that no milk will come out when the baby is nursing. At this same time James is getting fed through the G-tube so he is feeling full. It took a couple of times for him to latch and understand the difference between the pacifier and a nipple. We have not had a swallow study done to determine if James is able to coordinate sucking, breathing, and swallowing. Because he has the tracheostomy and is vent dependent with a very high pressure settings it's important that we don't just give him a bottle because he could aspirate liquid into the trach down his airway. A primary nurse, an RT who is training to be lactation consultant, and Dad were all in the room. This was the first time (6 months) for this bonding experience. We will continue practicing in hopes that James could possibly nurse in the future. We are not posting these photos. 😉
Dad ended up staying the night since he will be out of town this weekend for work. James had a massive diaper at 12:30am and at 4:15am to release gas.
