James had kind of a rough day. He had two BPD episodes during day shift, but we did not go up on the peep. Both of these were due to bowel movements.
James a special visitor from Cutco, one of Mike's top people, Jessica! Mike had a push contest and the winner was able to meet James. Just kidding, it's Jessica folks no contest needed! Mom approved and she said she was honored to meet him! 🥰 Adorable photos below.
Night Shift: This is the first night where the Night nurses spilt their shift in half at 1am for overtime hours. Sounds like an awful idea but they are short staffed at night. Why do Monday nights sucks so much?!
Early evening James was a happy baby, and he let his melatonin kick in.
11:30pm -2:00am - Mom slept for 2½ hours
2:00am-2:45am - James desats into 60s, no one came in. Mom suctioned and changed his diaper. The buddy nurse steps in to ask if Mom needs anything. Mind you his oxygen is not coming up and his pulse ox is now reading ➖➖➖. She doesn't boost him, she just tells our nurse in the room next door. She then pops her head in saying, "I'm just finishing up next door" even though James isn't even showing up on the monitor. Mom let her know that she just needed her to press the oxygen boost, the only thing that Mom is not allowed to do. This should have been pretty obvious, but Mom has to ask. The RT then comes in to give him his albuterol treatment. The RT asked Mom if she had suctioned and the nurse was in the room when she heard this.
3:00am - Feed pump alarm. No one coming in to turn it off. After awhile Mom gets up to turn off the alarm.
3:15am - Feed pump Alarm again. After waiting for awhile again Mom had to walk down the hall to inform the nurse talking to another nurse. She said she didn't hear it. She came in to fix it.
3:35am - Code Red Alarm (💭 fire on 4th floor?!?)
3:50am - Loud secretions, Vent alarm going off constantly - If James doesn't get suctioned this could cause a mucus plug. Mom suctioned him twice.
4:00am - James still irritated (💭 shift change at 7am comes soon trying to get back to sleep but Vent alarms keep going off)
4:00am-5:30am - Back to sleep for 1½ hours
5:30am-6:20am - Desating into the 50s, again no one coming in. He was having a full BPD episode. Mom turned the lights on to see that he was purple. She suctioned again and started changing his diaper. Buddy nurse pops her head in decided to stay in the room to help, by watching Mom change the diaper. This ended up being a massive blow out and he went through two diapers. Our nurse steps in and says that she was just finishing up nextdoor and thanks the buddy nurse so much for her help. Lol After changing 2 diapers, his bed sheets, and onesie he is back to sleep (💭 the sun coming up now). Mom let the nurse know that she has had to suction throughout the night and that this was not a good night for James. She then said to James, "You made my night so easy". Delusional.
The worst part is that the report to the day nurse is completely incorrect. She stated that James had an amazing night, was super easy, and didn't need to be suctioned at all. Seriously the hospital could save money by not even staffing a nurse in here and just giving Mom the ability to boost his oxygen. Mom will be able to adjust oxygen at home on the home vent anyways.
Not every Mom and Dad is hands-on and gets up to care for their baby. 🤯 If you don't know what is supposed to be happening, you can't get upset. Maybe Mom just has really high expectations. 🤷
P.S. You can email James your love and support as often as you’d like. Mom and Dad read these emails to James as they come in. We all love them! JamesWestonAbramowitz@gmail.com
