Day 233 - Rooming-In ✅
Friday, August 20th, 2021
12:30am: Mom experienced the first rain out. James had a bunch of water go down his tubing causing him to desat into the 40s and Brady. Turned on the lights and suctioned him several times. He was really pale but stayed asleep the whole time. Super scary that he did not try to cough. The nurse had the RT come in. The RT said that unfortunately the LTV is just a really wet circuit. She was wondering if we were going home with a heater because she suggested him just being on an HME instead. That way we wouldn't have to worry about rain out. We are going to have to look this up in the FB group because Mom feels like she’s getting different information from the RTs here and from our Brownings RT.
3:30 to 4:30am: James is really irritated, passing gas here and there. Mom even tried venting with a syringe again. She changed two diapers and one preemie diaper, sat him up and just patted his back for a while. Perhaps he needs Albuterol or Mylicon. He sounded kind of wheezy but after suctioning it sounded better.
4pm: Mom and Dad started their Room-In. Dad and Mom handled it like champs! We pretty much do everything anyways so it wasn't too much more to do. In addition to giving meds, responding to all alarms, changing every diaper, suctioning when needed... We also fortified breastmilk and measured accordingly, refilled the infinity pump, made sure James had enough Pedialyte in his other pump, as well as give the nebulizer treatments (even though we won't have this same heater or nebulizer at home).
James is having an output of approx 115-150mls from his G-tube into the premie diaper. This is progress from the 200+ he was at. We are hoping to get this under 100 before Tuesday so we won’t need to go home on Pedialyte.
Mom and Dad officially completed the CPR training today too. We reviewed how to bag, do chest compressions, and block the trach site and use a bag with a mask. We reviewed several steps to follow when we are at home and a few simulation drills that we can run through. For example: If theres no chest rise, what’s the first step? (Check if there’s any obstructions to the airway by bagging to use manual pressure to push anything through.)
We hope to never need to use what we learned, but it’s important to be prepared.
Overall, James really enjoyed having Mom and Dad in the room together with him. We all are ready to just get home!
