Day 265 - 2 Day Shift Nurses Meet James
Tuesday, September 21st, 2021
Was a little rough of a morning, James woke up around 3:45am for the day! Mom finally got him back to sleep around 6:00am. 🥱
We had a nurse show up today at 7:00am for Day Shift! Yay! We did not have a meet and greet with her. But she ended up being a really great nurse and she would be able to work on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At 8:00 a.m. we also had another nurse show up for a meet and greet. That nurse would be able to do Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays. So we'll have Monday through Friday day shifts covered! For the first few days a nurse is new mom is basically teaching them about James and training them on how to do things. Even if the nurse has had a trach and G-tube baby for over 10 years... every baby is different. Not every patient has inline suction, or is mobile, or needs the ventilator 24/7. Also sometimes nurses are taught to do something and never understood why they do it and it is just incorrect. Change is hard, especially when you've been doing something certain way for so long it's hard to be open-minded about doing it differently. It's super important for the nurses to listen to Mom and Dad for James' safety. We could write a book on things that we've seen.
Mom continues to do Night Shift and Dad gives Mom a break in the afternoons. Very little sleep, but we are used to this for the last 9 months.
Tomorrow we have two appointments and our nurse will be back for her second day.
The staffing agency wanted to know if we would like a male nurse at night but he could only work 11:00pm to 7:00am. A standard shift is 12 hours 7:00 to 7:00. So we decided against bringing this nurse on for nights because James typically goes to sleep around 9:00pm after he gets his meds and doesn't wake up until 7:00am. Literally this nurse would only giving him his 2 medications at 3:00am and refilling the milk in that period of time. Mind you mom is sleeping on an air mattress right next to a chair that the nurse is sitting in. Super awkward. So we are going to see if they can find a Night Nurse who can do the full 12 hours. Eventually it would be nice to have trust in someone to be able to sleep.
Dad has been attending Cutco meetings here and there via Zoom as well as planning a personal growth immersion retreat in Mexico for November. So if anyone is interested the week of November 15th reach out to Dad. Moreover if anyone is interested in helping Mom survive that week alone please reach out to Mom. Not sure how trach care is going to work. 🤷🏻♀️
On a random side note James really wanted to nurse Dad today and it was hilarious. He was getting really mad that Dad would not let him do this. 😂 James has never breastfed because he has a trach, it is just instinct.
P.S. If you read the blog and are supporting James through his journey we would love you to participate in our video montage of everyone singing his lullaby. Please see the James Weston lullaby post for more details. ❤️
P.P.S. Thank you so much for the lullaby submissions so far! It's so exciting to have all of you be a part of something so special! 😭
