Day 280 - Bath 🛁 & Trach Change

Wednesday, October 6th, 2021

In the afternoon Mom had her monthly Zoom with Insurance, Staffing, and the Pediatrician's office. The call is intended to make sure that we are adequately staffed and to iron out any issues. Well only Insurance showed up for the call 🙄, so we went over any changes regarding his medications, feed, overall health, bills, claims, denials, and appeals. CMS Medicaid (Children's Medical Services) was just purchased by Sunshine, and they state that this change will not affect the patients at all. However anytime a company is purchased by someone else there are a ton of changes... new websites, new logins, a ton of bugs to be worked out regarding processes and technical issues usually due to "new traffic". Well this is having Mom make several phone calls a day and not get anywhere with anyone just to be able to log in to the new site.

Tonight was bath night for James! We do a bath every other night, and when we're not doing a bath we wipe him down some Johnson & Johnson wipes. Dad just purchased these off our registry for Mom. They smell amazing! He loves sitting in the warm water, typically kicking his feet and splashing water all over the place! Sometimes he even holds the side of the tub and it looks like he is saying, "this is so relaxing". 😆 Sometimes he puts a fist full of soapy water right in his mouth.

You're probably wondering about our setup. So we set up a massage table in the living room which is normally stored in Mike's office. We raise the massage table to be as high as it could possibly be to try and save our backs. Then we cover it with chucks, while we fill up a tub with some warm water in the kitchen sink and carry that over to the living room. James does not have core strength yet so we need to use the infant side of this tub which allows him to lay back. If he faces the other direction in the tub, the seat sits straight up. We tried that one night, but it was kind of dangerous.

Recently James has been drooling a lot and not only does this cause this chin to be really red, but additionally it makes the trach ties wet which could cause yeast. James has also been pulling at his trach.

During his trach change this evening James proceeded to touch his stoma when it was exposed. Mom took out the trach and held his chin while Dad inserted the new trach with the obturator inside. At this point James starts grabbing at things, now Dad has to keep holding on the trach in (with slippery lube everywhere), take out the obturator, as well as hold James' hands out of the way. Mom was disconnecting the oxygen from the old trach and reattaching the oxygen to the new trach. James was choking because the obturator needed to be removed immediately; James could not breath. Next time we will be going back to swaddling his arms down, for his safety.

P.S. If you read the blog and are supporting James through his journey we would love you to participate in our video montage of everyone singing his lullaby. Please see the James Weston lullaby post for more details. ❤️

P.P.S. Thank you so much for the lullaby submissions so far! It's so exciting to have all of you be a part of something so special! 😭
