Day 310 - Tummy Time with Mommy

Nurse rant

Our nurse left early today to celebrate her daughter's birthday. James spent some time in his bouncer after Dad explained to the nurse that we would like her to work with him. Yes, it's kinda ridiculous that a male needs to be the one they listen to. Mom can stress all day long but as soon as Dad requests something from them, it's done. What's funny is that Mom is the one making decisions to let people go, I guess they haven't figured that one out yet. So the nurse said that Physical Therapy is not her specialty, and that she is a nurse. We get it, you went to school to become a nurse. But hey you're currently in Home Health, this isn't a high stress fast paced Hospital and we would like there to be a point to have nursing. One mentioned that if this assignment ends up being more like "nannying" she will quit. Again, this is Home Health, go work in a hospital. They say that they are here for his safety, but honestly if there's an emergency situation Mom and/or Dad will handle. We don't feel comfortable with them handling. James is an easy baby, this is a very easy job being a Home Health nurse. They are literally so bored when they are here. Why? Because they aren't working with James or doing one of the many things they know they could be helping with. Why is Mom never bored? Because she is busy doing everything. After 2 months, Mom shouldn't have to be explaining what they could be doing every time they are just sitting there. But maybe Home Health nurses just do the minimum, waiting to clock out. We remember some of those nurses from the hospital... It was actually far and few between to find a nurse willing to go above and beyond.

So after she left Mom did tummy time with James because the Physical Therapist (who only comes once a week) stated we should be doing this daily. It's the only way James is going to make his core strong enough to roll over and sit up. He is tolerating more and more every time!

Maybe the nurses just aren't comfortable handling him with his trach, circuit, and G-tube. We could see how they would not want to come off incompetent by admitting that. We did have one nurse finally admit it after Mom asked why she never worked with him. If you can't handle the job and would rather be in a high acuity environment, then why are you in Home Health⁉️ Folded laundry and clean syringes isn't worth the lack of privacy.

P.S. If you read the blog and are supporting James through his journey we would love you to participate in our video montage of everyone singing his lullaby. Please see the James Weston lullaby post for more details. ❤️

P.P.S. Thank you so much for the lullaby submissions so far! It's so exciting to have all of you be a part of something so special! 😭
