Day 652 - Bird Watching 🐦, and Applebee's 🍎
Thursday, October 13th, 2022
In the morning James was excited about watching birds from his window. Mom added more bird seed and it was only a matter of minutes for the blue jays to come up. Normally we have a family of cardinals but we didn't see them.
During physical therapy we worked on James climbing from one cushion to another. Attempting to get him in a kneeling position and then putting his arms up on the next higher level cushion. Just focused on those two steps! After PT while Mom was venting his G-tube we noticed that his gastric juice was tinted pink most likely from blood. Normally it is clear or yellow, but never pink. James did have a couple of gauzes with red blood as well. Probably too much trauma to the site during PT.
We ended the day with Applebee's 🍎 because we had some old birthday gift cards from Aunt Debra. Afterwards we went to get Italian ice. Family dinner night was a success and James got to try some new flavors. 🍝 🍦
Yesterday Mom mailed some packages to a few trach moms.
DID YOU KNOW? 🤔
Did you know that if it wasn't for FB groups most trach Moms wouldn't have enough of the correct medical supplies for their child? Sometimes it's issues with insurance but most of time it's the 3rd party medical supplier (DME).
"Free For Shipping" (FFS) means that people will ship an item for free as long as you pay for them for the shipping costs. It's much cheaper than buying the items directly from a medical supply company. Sometimes that's not even an option because the company won't sell directly to a patient. You're just out of luck unless you can find it through FB. We have probably paid close to 30 people for shipping medical supplies over the last year and have also shipped out several things.
When you first get home you need to be pretty frugal with the supplies you receive from the DME. We would get 30 of something a month, but would stretch it's use to 48 hours, cleaning it after 24 hours to create a stash. Not only do you need extras for the To-Go bag but also for a 4 day Evacuation Emergency bag (power is out, hurricane, gas leak...you never know). You always need to be prepared! In addition, before being discharged we lucked out having a few of our favorite RNs stock us up (half of those items would never be covered by insurance anyways).
So yesterday we shipped out two trachs and two circuits to two trach moms in desperate need. Thankful to be able to help them! If it wasn't for FB groups I'm not sure what we would do.
