Day 706 - Bad Physical Therapy Appointment 😥

Tuesday, December 6th, 2022

Today was a bad day. James had physical therapy in the morning and he cried as soon as he saw her and reached for Mom. This is a new thing he is doing. We have had PT with her for over a year now.

We have always really liked our physical therapist but recently on the last couple of visits we've found that she has grown very frustrated. Today she specifically voiced that she was frustrated and held him in a sitting position while James screamed bloody murder because she said she wanted to let him know who was in charge. That wasn't even what bothered Mom. The PT made a comment that "when he is 50 years old he will still be scooting around on his back on the floor". She also informed us that another 2-year-old she works with is already running. 👏 Good for her. Every child has a different background and path.

Assumptive comments were made that Mom doesn't work with James at all. We think this was because James was difficult to work with today. He only wants to scoot around on his back. James doesn't want to crawl or kneel and has no interest of reaching up for anything when he's on the ground. Why is this? Because he realizes this is the fastest way to travel and unfortunately we were told to let him do this for several hours a day by our PT. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The fact is Mom spends every single minute with James, and works with him all the time so it was very frustrating to hear. Mom tried as hard as she could to hold back tears as the PT was insisting that "James probably just lays in the crib all day". Mom has to repeatedly defend herself and explain the detailed daily schedule yet continues to get blamed for James' lack of interest in walking. Mom is sick up getting the rundown of what she "obviously" hasn't been doing for him when the PT isn't there. It is incredibly draining to have to deal with comments like that especially when you're doing everything possibly can for your child already.

So we didn't really get anything accomplished other than understanding that we need to try something else, because this wasn't working. Mom reached out to one of the Trach Mom Facebook groups to get support and advice on this situation. It was suggested that we look into intensive therapy programs, which are like PT bootcamps. Something like 2x a week, 3 hours week for only a few weeks. Everyone in the FB group suggested we get a new therapist. Mom is going to chalk it up to someone just having a bad day, but will also be proactively looking at other options.

James loves his vanilla Greek yogurt. He has had it a few days in a row now. He also helped Mom make dinner tasting the sweet potatoes to make sure they were still good. James is at the developmental stage where he only likes something for 10 seconds before throwing it. Wonder how long this stage lasts... Mom is getting quite the workout.

P.S. You can email James your love and support as often as you’d like. Mom and Dad read these email to James as they come in. We all love them! JamesWestonAbramowitz@gmail.com
