Day 819 - Unordered Medical Equipment & Sitting Up with No Support! 🪑
Wednesday, March 29th, 2023
The morning started off with phone calls and text messages from the wheelchair company. They said they had the medical bath lounger we ordered was ready to be delivered. Mom let them know we did not order a bath chair and we did not have a need for it. James sits up perfectly fine and has good core strength. This guy was very confused because the order was put in by the Motion Analysis department at the hospital. Supposedly she had taken it upon herself to order this for us even though it was not something ever discussed. She even went as far to add a note saying that "we bathe James in a small tub and he falls forward a lot while in the tub so this equipment was necessary". That is not true and never was true. It's really disturbing how pushy the hospital is to charge insurance for equipment. Not only would it be something we don't even need but also insurance only covers 1 item every 7 years. We don't want to limit ourselves with something he wouldn't even use!
We ended up having PT today because she would be out of town on Thursday. Mom let her know of the situation this morning and it turns out we are the 2nd family this week that the Motion Analysis department ordered equipment that was never discussed with the family. Our therapist was pissed and called the wheelchair company to let them know of the issue with the hospital. They told her our wheelchair was ready for pickup too. That didn't make sense because Mom still had the paperwork she received in the mail which required her signature to bill insurance. Without that piece of paper the wheelchair should not have even been built. While the therapist was on the phone with them she figured it would be a good time to also discuss the fact that we really aren't interested in the wheelchair and it would be in James' best interest to get something like a gait trainer instead.
When Mom met with Motion Analysis and almost 2 months ago and mentioned the gait trainer, it was completely shut down. Mom put James on the floor that day and had him scoot around to show them that he did not need upper body support from the wheelchair. They ignored him and continued discussing wheelchair colors. 🚩 Mom was not given options and was basically told what she would be getting. This was by someone who didn't know James and only looked at him for a few minutes. What should have happened is that our physical therapist who has been working with James for a year and a half should have been consulted. Typically the physical therapist is someone who would recommend any equipment. Our PT said that she is slow to make recommendations for equipment and Mom totally understood that. It seems like the hospital on the other hand is getting some type of kickback or has a minimum number of pieces of equipment that need to be sent to insurance. It's like the Motion Analysis department has a quota they have to hit or something.
Speaking of sitting up, James was doing so good sitting in a regular chair at the kitchen table with no support. At one moment James felt back a little bit but caught himself. It took about 30 seconds for James to realize what had just happened and he started to cry.
After the weekly trach change, Dad tickled James by blowing raspberries. 🤗 Then Dad helped Mom out while she took a shower and wrote the insurance denial letter. Well he actually didn't actually write it. He used AI (artificial intelligence) to write it using ChatGPT. Dad is teaching small business owners how to win their time back by using automation and delegation.
